VCCE Programs Underway
Sep 12, 2011
Volleyball Canada has officially launched 6 Volleyball Centre of Excellence programs around the province of BC this September. This new program, designed for high performance youth athletes has opened in strategic locations throughout BC including Victoria, Richmond, Abbotsford, Langley, Kelowna and Prince George. The first centre was launched in September 2010 at the Richmond Olympic Oval, and with its inaugural success, Volleyball Canada has partnered with several organizations to expand the concept in other regions in the province. The centres feature two comprehensive volleyball programs; a Daytime weekly program and a Sunday program.
The Daytime program focuses on individual skill development with an emphasis on high rep, low intensity workouts with a higher coach to athlete ratio. The program is offered twice a week for a total of 26 weeks over the course of the year. Athletes have several scheduling options to choose from with up to 5 days a week and 2 timeslots per day. The Daytime program is designed to fill the skill development gap and work in conjunction with the athlete's high school and club season. Seasonal plans that include strength and conditioning and proper rest and recovery are provided for each athlete. Communications are managed between athlete and coach by using Volleyball Canada’s Sport Leader Daytime Athlete website.
The Sunday program focuses on individual skill development with an emphasis on position specific training, strength and conditioning, and skill assessment in a group setting. This series of 4 hour sessions encompasses complimentary components including mental training, weight training, physical assessment and much more.
There are plans to expand the concept to other provinces in Canada in the years to come. Our goal is to create a long term sustainable high performance pathway for our 16-18 year old athletes (Learning to Compete). Our Canadian athletes have what it takes to make it to the highest level, now we can provide them with the training needed to get there.
